MONDAY, JULY 13 PROGRAM Fiber Art Techniques, Childhood Memories & Storytelling Angelica Raquel 11 a.m. Angelica Raquel’s work is deeply rooted in the familial stories and the cultural traditions of her upbringing in Laredo, TX. She uses techniques in fiber such as rug hooking, tufting, needle and wet felting to spin the stories that she so eloquently expresses in her artwork. Learning fiber art techniques opened the door to childhood's fuzzy memories and the communal ritual of storytelling. She will tell us about her process in turning these nostalgic stories and craft techniques into contemporary art and leaning into the cultural teachings of South Texas. Angelica recently had an exhibition at the Mc Nay Art Museum, Mystic Threads, that ended July 5th. About the artist: Angelica relocated to Central Texas where she earned her BFA from Texas State University in 2016 before settling in San Antonio Texas where she earned her MFA from UTSA in 2020. Angelica’s work has been exhibited nationally, most notable include Visions West Contemporary in Denver Colorado, Gerald Peters Contemporary in Santa Fe New Mexico, and solo exhibitions at The McNay Art Museum in San Antonio TX, and Lawndale Center for The Arts in Houston TX where she currently serves on the Artist Advisory Board. Ready, Set, Submit! This Workshop will detail how to prepare and submit your work to be juried into FASA’s Exhibition, Viriditas. 12:30–3:30 p.m. Program Highlights
We hope you’ll join us for this informative afternoon as we launch Viriditas: Flourishing Life Energy and prepare for another outstanding FASA exhibition. Presenters' Bios Lyn Belisle is a mixed-media artist whose work combines earthenware, beeswax, photography, fiber, and assemblage. A former art educator and IT faculty member at Trinity University, she now creates in her studio and teaches encaustic and mixed-media workshops. Lyn serves as Vice President of the International Encaustic Artists and has held multiple leadership roles with Fiber Artists of San Antonio. She will share tips for writing artist bios and statements. Ansen Seale is a digital artist and professional photographer whose work investigates the passage of time. Using a panoramic camera of his own invention, he records a single slice of space over an extended period, creating images that blur stationary objects while clearly rendering movement. His work is exhibited and collected internationally. Seale was named the 2020 San Antonio Art League Artist of the Year and serves as President of PublicArtist.org. Claudia Cruz Hidrogo serves as the Kelso Art Gallery Director and Art Department Secretary at the University of the Incarnate Word. She oversees the installation of multiple exhibitions each year, working with artists across a variety of media and exhibition formats. Her experience has shown that successful presentation extends beyond simply displaying artwork, requiring careful consideration of space, lighting, sightlines, relationships among artworks, and audience engagement to create meaningful exhibition experiences. MONDAY, JUNE 8: PROGRAM Pet Portraits in Cloth Rebecca Lilly Segura is a textile artist who creates pictorial quilts of people and animals using techniques such as textile collage and thread painting. On Monday, June 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the San Antonio Garden Center, she will present a slideshow of her collaged pet portraits, discussing her process and how her work supports nonprofit animal charities. Inspired in the 1990s after seeing Simply Quilts featuring Susan Carlson, Rebecca has refined her skills through classes and extensive practice. Since 2019, she has focused on commissioned pet portraits, with each piece generating a donation from the owner to an animal shelter or clinic. One recent raffle portrait raised $1,800 for the Wilson County Low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. Her work has been exhibited at the International Quilt Museum and in shows such as the International Quilt Festival in Houston and the Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene. Her art has also been featured in publications including Quilt Folk: Cats, Quilt Folk: Dogs, Quilting Arts Magazine, Nebraska Life Magazine, and Voices de la Luna. Rebecca earned her art degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and lives in Wilson County, Texas, with her husband and their cat, Jackson Brown. Workshop/Sharing Session: 12:30 – 3:30 BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH After the Presentation all are invited to join in from 12:30 – 3:30 “Pet Palooza- Collaborative Fiber art Skill Sharing & Creating Session” Several fiber artists will share their techniques for transferring their favorite pets or animals to fiber art projects. Bring your work to share with the group too and come prepared to try a sampling of various techniques. Some materials will be provided to share but bring what you would like to work with (needles, scissors, cloth etc.) and create sample pet memories. APRIL 2026 MONDAY, APRIL 13: PROGRAM AI AS STUDIO COMPANION: Inspiration, Organization & Creative Support with Lyn Belisle Curious about AI, but not sure how it fits into a fiber art practice? This welcoming, artist-centered presentation is designed especially for Fiber Artists of San Antonio—focused on practical use, creative control, and real studio benefits (not tech hype). We’ll look at AI the way artists have always looked at tools: as something that can support your process without replacing your hand, your voice, or your intuition. Think of AI as a talking sketchbook, a digital design wall, or a studio assistant—one that can help you explore ideas safely before you cut cloth, dye yardage, or commit hours to stitching. Slow Stitching to Sanity: Program & Workshop FASA Program – March 9, 2026 – 11:00 am to 1:00 pm – Registration not required. After the Business Meeting, attendees will participate in a two-hour workshop on show stitching with Byrdy Wagner. Hello, welcome to my world of stitching circles. I am Byrdy Wagner, a fiber artist living in a forest along the Medina River near San Antonio. The serene and chaotic beauty of my natural surroundings inspires my work, especially the patterns created by sunlight filtering through the tall cypress trees. This connection to nature brings a sense of calm and sanity to my creative practice, and I strive to merge this mental tranquility with the use of sustainable materials. Slow stitch is an ideal technique to achieve both goals. In our 2 hours, we will have an outlined plan to complete 4 different sets of circles which is the beginning of a stitch memory booklet. Remember -- our journey is the destination.

Hearts for the Arts FASA Education Scholarship Fundraiser The Event will take place at the San Antonio Garden Center February 9, 2026 after regular FASA meeting, starting at 12:15. Tickets - $40 donation Participants are eligible to sign up for two art sessions Art session #1 begins 12:15 - 1:45 pm / Art session #2 begins 2:00 - 3:30 pm You choose two workshops - so come early to make your picks: Opens at 9:15am If class fills you get to make an alternative pick - Each class is a winner - we promise! There will be six workshops: 1st session 12:30pm then a repeat at 2:00pm NOTE: There will be a free to the public General Session beginning 11:00 am - 12:00 pm. General Session: The Artist presenters will speak about their art journey, their engagement with the fiber art community, and the project that will be shared during the Workshop. The Heart for the Arts Sessions (2 per registered participant) will immediately follow the general presentation for paid Workshop participants. Join fiber artist Beth Cunningham at FASA Meeting on January 12th, 10:00am for an inspiring hands-on workshop exploring the art of transforming paper into delicate, stitched 2D dress compositions. Drawing on techniques developed during her art residencies in France, Beth will begin with an overview of her creative process and the evolution of her paper dress series. Participants will then watch a demonstration of her signature paper layering techniques, originally used in her 3D dress constructions, before beginning their own 2D paper dress artwork. Students will work with an image of a dress printed on watercolor paper and a selection of instructor-made specialty papers. Using watercolor, gold leaf, and stitch, each participant will design a unique piece that blends color, texture, and embroidery to tell a personal story. The Presentation with hands-on art session will start at 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The session will be free to all who attend, registration not required. Coming on November 10th will be Patsy and Edwin Sasek. Both are co-founders of Abode, Contemplative Care for the Dying as well as talented artists, creative writers, speakers, and workshop facilitators. They will share with us the history, significance, and art of creating mandalas for art, healing, meditation, and personal enrichment! Following their presentation at 12:30 they will conduct a hands-on workshop to create your own mandalas and reflect on its significance in your life & art. Registration for the workshop will be $20.00 Registration will open on FASA’s website www.safiberarts.org on October 10th, enrollment limited to 12 participants.

From Numbers to Narrative: Using Fiber to Visualize Data - with Tina Linville Presentation Description: Join fiber artist Tina Linville in an exploration of how fiber techniques can transform raw data into compelling visual art experiences. By translating statistics, patterns, and collected information into color, material, and form with traditional fiber techniques and processes, otherwise stale information has the potential to become more understandable, useful, and emotionally resonant. Presentation attendees will discover examples from contemporary fiber artists, learn practical strategies for mapping data with fiber, and gain inspiration for incorporating personal or community data into their own projects.

Doerte Weber "My artistic journey is profoundly influenced by the pioneering spirit of the Bauhaus women weavers. These remarkable individuals, largely self-taught, approached their craft with an open-mindedness free of preconceived notions, embracing experimentation as a fundamental part of their process. Their dedication to learning through trial and error deeply resonates with my path as a predominantly self-taught artist. "Many FASA members know me and remember my early journey—I was a member from around 2010 to 2013. At the August 11th meeting, I’ll share how I went from being a weaver inspired by the Bauhaus movement—especially Anni Albers—with no formal artistic background, to someone whose work is now included in public art commissions, national consulting projects, and both private and public collections across the U.S. and abroad. Inspired by the Bauhaus women weavers, I embrace a self-taught, experimental approach that values learning through trial and error. I transform overlooked materials into tactile works that blend traditional weaving patterns with contemporary narratives, revealing beauty in the everyday and bridging past and present. My art seeks to evoke emotional connection and shared humanity, capturing the fleeting yet powerful moments that unite us." July Program

Speaker: Michelle Belto Title of Talk: Art is a Tool to A Deeper Reality Description: Join us for the June FASA meeting. Our presenter will be FASA member, Michelle Belto, who will explore our artwork as a portal to the deeper layers of memory, emotion, and transformation. Using the beloved childhood game Chutes and Ladders as a guiding metaphor, this talk invites artists to reflect on how unexpected moments can drop us into rich, unresolved memories that, when explored through creativity, offer profound insights. Just as a breath-catching image can lift the viewer into a moment of transcendence, art created with authenticity and vulnerability become a ladder to higher truths. The session includes a group reflection activity, a presentation of original artwork, and an invitation to consider how your own creative journey maps onto this universal gameboard of descent and ascent. Come for connection, inspiration and a fresh sense of creative direction.

Connecting Threads: Fiber Art and the San Antonio Art League + Museum Join us for an insider's look at the venerable Art League, founded in 1912 and still going strong. Board President Lyn Belisle will share a brief history of the Art League and Museum, including stories of incredible cash awards, possible art forgeries, and a permanent collection that prompted a lawsuit. But the most important thing to us as FASA members is the Art League's significant ties to fiber art. The SAAL+M recognized the importance of expressions in textiles as fine art before most museums were willing to acknowledge this. And the advocacy for fiber artists continues to grow stronger, as you will see. During the presentation, you'll also get a brief overview of exhibition opportunities for Members at the Museum and a sneak preview of upcoming events.

JANUARY PROGRAM: JANE DUNNEWOLD -- IN PERSON AT THE GARDEN CENTER, MONDAY JANUARY 8, 2024 Damsel, Hero, Artist, Judge: Meditations on Archetypes and CreativityJane will discuss the intersection of archetypes with the creative process, and proposes that when you understand the lessons an archetype presents, it deepens your connection to your creative self and frees you to make better art – more often. Jane Dunnewold teaches and lectures internationally, and has mounted numerous solo exhibitions, including Inspired by the Masters (National Quilt Museum (2020) & Texas Quilt Museum (2018). A second mixed media series featuring re-purposed quilt blocks and gold leaf was exhibited at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas (2017) and more recently at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, Fl. Her archives were recently acquired by the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her work won Best of Show in the exhibition Timeless Meditations (Tubac Art Center/2013). She is a recipient of the Quilt Japan Prize, and Gold Prize at the Taegue (Korea) International Textile Exhibition. In 2019 she was named Artist of the Year by the San Antonio Art League. Dunnewold has authored numerous books, including the classic Complex Cloth (1996) and Art Cloth: A Guide to Surface Design on Fabric (2010.) In 2016 North Light Books published Creative Strength Training: Prompts, Exercises and Stories to Inspire Artistic Genius. Her recently self-published books, Best of Both Worlds: Enhanced Botanical Printing, and Improvisational Screen Printing are both available world-wide on amazon.com. She is a former President of the Surface Design Association and currently facilitates a ten month Creative Strength Training community online.
