Like so many of my workshops, this design came from experimenting with simple materials and adding serendipitous touches that result in a figurative work.

I have always loved secret hiding places and little cryptic notes hidden in books and tree trunks. Perhaps that’s why my work has always been strongly influenced by the idea of “shards” as a metaphor for human communication across time. A shard can be a found fragment of clay, a rusty nail, a scrap of handwriting – any little clue that becomes a “secret handshake” between the maker and the discoverer. I am perpetually drawn to visible traces from the passage of time that suggest story fragments.

If you have taken my workshop called Wanderers
, you will see that these Spirit Boxes are true cousins of those constructions. They can be personalized and adapted in so many ways.

My workshops have several signature features
that I am proud of – they use simple, often recycled materials, they do not rely on complicated skills or a degree in fine arts, and the instruction is informal, friendly, and easy to follow. One more thing about these workshops – they show you techniques and ideas that you can adapt to other projects that you are working on.
Simple materials you will need to bring with you:

Materials List
  • Scissors
  • One mint tin (Altoid-type)
  • Awl or round nail and hammer for punching holes in tin
  • One 9” piece medium gauge wire
  • Approximately 2” round or oval ornament for face:  button, face cabochon, air-dried clay, etc. (I use my own earthenware faces – see note about optional kit, right)
  • Two 4.5x3.5” pieces of matboard or heavy cardboard stock
  • Adhesives (glue sticks or PVC glue for paper, hot glue or E6000 to attach tin)
  • One 12x9” piece lightweight decorative paper, scraps and pieces of other paper and fabric for covering and layering
  • Decorative paper, beads, ephemera, small objects
  • Twine, yarn, paper shreds for hair and adornment

Lyn will bring an assortment of goodies to share, as well.

About the Instructor:

Lyn Belisle is a multidisciplinary artist embracing encaustic painting, earthenware, digital imagery, sculpture, textiles and found objects. Her artwork gives expression to her quest to discover and connect synchronistic shards of meaning through collage and assemblage. Her signature media are clay, beeswax, paper and fiber.

Lyn received her MA from Trinity University where she majored in studio art as an undergraduate.  She teaches mixed-media workshops at Lyn Belisle Studio in San Antonio, and also teaches nationally, most recently in Santa Fe, Provincetown, Washington State, and Taos.

She recently retired from the faculty in the Computer Science Department at Trinity to work full time at her studio. She has work at The Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe and in the San Antonio Art League & Museum. Lyn has had six one-person gallery exhibits since 2011. She currently serves as the President of the San Antonio Art League. Creativity runs in the family. She is the mother of best-selling author Rick Riordan.
Note: Many people will like to use their own materials, but there is also a Spirit Box Kit included in the price of the workshop.

It contains a pre-cut "body" with two matboard panels and a connection panel, some sari silk for wrapping, and a handmade fired clay Shard Face from Lyn's Etsy shop.
